Relapse Prevention

This may sound obvious but the time for relapse prevention is before the relapse, not after. Too often relapse prevention refers to the next relapse instead of just removing relapse as an issue to begin with. Addictions can be classified by a condition of repeated and compulsive seeking and use of drugs, alcohol, or other similar substances despite adverse social, mental, and physical consequences. Addictions is probably a more correct use of the term addiction as most individuals entering addiction treatment generally have more than one substance of abuse, beyond their primary one. The strength, potency, and wide types of drugs and substances on the scene today make these addictions the plague of the modern world. There are only three possible outcomes for these addictions; jail, death, or sobriety, ultimately the addict must choose.

Addiction clinics are generally out-patient facilities which offer various services to aid in addiction recovery. Some, such as methadone clinics, are actually involved in simply substituting one drug or another. This is misguided help as replacing one drug with another is never a long term solution to drug addiction. This is not to say that addiction clinics don’t offer some valuable services, most of them do. An addiction clinic can be a starting point in confronting addiction. LSD is one of the most psychologically damaging drugs available on the streets today. LSD users may manifest relatively long-lasting psychoses such as schizophrenia or severe depression, even after only one use. There is a tolerance that can build up requiring larger and larger doses to induce the “LSD trip”, but is there such a thing as LSD addiction? Addiction is a condition characterized by repeated compulsive seeking and use of drugs, alcohol or other substances despite adverse social, mental and physical consequences. Many individuals coming to addiction treatment for LSD report using more and more of the drug more frequently over time with many of these individuals binging on the drug for long periods of time.

An effective drug abuse treatment center will competently deal with all levels of drug use problems whether abuse or addiction. If one is abusing drugs or alcohol then addiction has already to spread its tentacles around the user. Drug or alcohol abuse leading to addiction always starts as an attempted solution to some form of pain in life. This pain could be mental, physical, or both. It could start as simply of handling the pain of trying to fit in by going along with the crowd and using drugs, or perhaps excessive drinking as a supposed solution to unconfrontable home situations. There are probably as many reasons as there are abusers, addicts, and alcoholics. A good drug abuse treatment center realizes that unless the underlying reasons behind the addiction are handled the individual though now clean, will often finding themselves falling back into the trap of use and addiction as a false solution to handling the stresses that initially caused it to begin with - and never were handled.
